Greenland takes a step toward independence

June 22, 2009

On June 22 2009, Greenland declared its independence from Denmark by celebrating Self Government Day.

While Denmark will retain control over Greenland’s defense and foreign policy, many see self-rule as the last step towards independence from Denmark. Under the self-rule agreement, Greenlanders will be recognised as a distinct people with the right to self-determination and Greenlandic will become the territory's official language.

Greenland is the world's largest non-continental island and is popular with tourists for its spectacular landscape. The locals are very friendly and always happy to help any visitors enjoy their country. Most places in Greenland are small and everyone knows where everything is, so not many bother to put up signs, meaning you can be surprised by finding a fully equipped supermarket in the middle of nowhere!
