Rattvik

A town with a population of 11, 000 people and located on the east coast of the Siljan Lake. Famous for hosing the World Folkdance/Folkmusic festival "Rattvikdansen".


Smaland Kingdom of Crystal

In the mid 18th century, with forestry in decline, this south-eastern district of Sweden needed to find a new industry to support its people. The glass works industry was born in Kosta, using firewood from the immense surrounding forests and water from the lakes. As the glass industry boomed and its wares distributed all over the world, the district soon came to be known as the Kingdom of Crystal. Authentic products can be bought at discount prices and there is, of course, the factory tour. There are 11 factories in all, and a few of them are introduced below. The access cities are Kalmar and Vaxjo

Access: An hour's flight by Scandinavia Air from Stockholm and Copenhagen to Växjö or Kalmar. A 3 and a half hour train ride from Stockholm.

Sandhamn

Sandhamn is one of the more popular islands in the Stockholm archipelago. In the summer time Sandhamn offer plenty do from sailing and fishing to shopping and eating. Sandhamn is a great resort in the summer. From Stockholm, there is a one-way 3-hour canal tour every day during the summer. Day trips are also recommended.

Falun Koppargruva

Sightseeing of the workroom is possible by going down 55m by elevator through the coal shaft. There is also a museum.

Trollenas Castle

5km west of Eslov. Built at the end of the 14th century, it was renovated and extended in the 19th century. The exterior is in the renassance style while the interior is baroque. The English style gardens have a 12th century chapel.

Vaxjo

Established in 1342, this town is the centre of the Crystal Kingdom. There is an immigration museum showing records of the 1.2 million Swedish people who left for the United States between 1850 and 1930.

St. Petri Church (St. Petri Kyrka)

A red gothic style building built in the mid 14th century with an 88m high tower, located next to the city hall. A magnificent fresco painting can be fond inside along with a chapel built for traders during the Middle Ages.

Malmö Castle (Malmöhus)

Located to the west of the city stands a renaissance style castle surrounded by greenery and a moat. Built in the 15th century, it is the oldest castle in Scandinavia. Parts of the castle are open to the public as museums.


Haga Park

Haga Parken was loved by Gustav III and has been designated as the world's first national Eco Park located in a city. The pavilion is decorated in an elegant Gustavian style. The park also has two beautiful exhibitions about butterflies and birds. This park is lovely to visit in the summertime.


Gustavsberg

Gustavsberg is a small yet historic town town 20km east of Stockholm. It is famous throughout the world for its china factory, which was founded in the year 1825. The town evolved around the factory in the 19th century and homes of the working man can be seen when taking a walk through this idyllic town.


Drottningholm Royal Theatre

The Royal Theatre was built in 1766 to celebrate the birth of Gustav III. It was used as a storehouse after Gustav III was assassinated in 1792, but was later restored at the turn of the 20th century. The theatre is now used for opera and other performances during the summer.

The Smaland Museum

The Småland Museum, designed to display the history and culture of the Småland District, has a glass museum and it introduces the historical background and the features of each of the glass factories. There is also an immigration museum showing the hopes and dreams of the people who left for America in the 19th century.


The Islands of Fjäderholmarna

These islands called 'Fjäderholmarna', are about 25 minutes from Stockholm by commuter boat, and it is the closest archipelago island from the city. On the island, you can find glass products and textiles by young emerging designers. You can even participate in pottery workshops. The open-air theater is very popular during the summer. The famous designer hotel "Hotel J" is also located in this area at Nacka Strand, the middle stop along the commuter boat line.

Arm Museum (Armemuseum)

The Arm Museum displays a wide collection of military uniforms, weapons and war journals, which tell the history of the Swedish army and weapons over the past 500 years. It is located in the Östermalm area.

Karlstad

A sport city abundant in radiant sunshine. North of the Vänern lake, a city located between Stockholm and Oslo. It is abundant in lakes, rivers, greenery and sunshine, especially since this is the city's symbol. Karlstad is known as a city of sports and activities. Boat and canoe sailing on the lakes and rivers, fishing, cycling, hiking, horse riding and many other sports are enjoyed daily here, and courses and facilities are abundant. The people are very enthusiastic about supporting sports too; especially the first stage of the bicycle race "Sweden Rally" that is held in the Varmland District and that attracts many fans.
