Scandinavians In Oz
There are approximately 25,000 Scandinavian-born people living in Australia. The Swedes lead the charge followed by the Danes and the Norwegians. The numbers keep increasing every year…
Around 250 Scandinavian companies have subsidiaries in Australia and another 700 companies are represented through an Australian agent or distributor.
While you might think that design is the main focus of Scandinavian imports to Australia, Scandinavian companies are also leaders in industries such as telecommunications, medical & pharmacy, transport & machinery, energy and even meat imports.
You can find Scandinavian community organisations in all capital cities around Australia. So if you want to become Scandinavianised in Australia, get in touch with any of the Scandinavian schools, church groups, folk dance groups, women's groups, playgroups, business groups and more.
Traditions
Traditions are to be celebrated and most Scandinavians take their traditions seriously. Christmas, Easter, Midsummer and the three nations’ national days are the most important ones, but some surprising other traditions are celebrated in Scandinavia, such as Lucia, the festival of light inspired by the Italian Santa Lucia.
Why don’t you join in one of the many Scandinavian festivities held in Australia? Join the Swedes on Midsummer and do the ‘frog dance’ around a Maypole. Join Norway on their national day the 17th of May, also referred to as syttende mai. Celebrate Christmas with the Danes and enjoy a splendid meal of traditional goose on a beautifully decorated smorgasbord.
The event calendar will keep you abreast of everything Scandinavian. So stay tuned to all Scandinavian events taking place in Australia and the three home countries.
